AMD rolls high-performance processors for automotive usage

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and automated driving require increasingly powerful and sophisticated edge sensors that also generate even larger amounts of data. To meet these market demands, AMD is introducing two new products in the Automotive XA Artix+ UltraScale+ family.

AMD’s new XA AU10P and XA AU15P processors are automotive-qualified and optimized for use in driver assistance system (ADAS) sensor applications. The cost-optimized Artix UltraScale+ devices expand AMD’s portfolio of automotive-qualified, functional safety-tested, highly scalable FPGAs and adaptive SoCs to complement the automotive-qualified Spartan 7, Zynq 7000 and Zynq UltraScale product families.

XA Artix UltraScale+ processors are certified for functional safety up to ASIL-B, which is critical for automotive ADAS sensors – from cameras to lidar – and enables customers – automakers, robotaxi developers and Tier 1 suppliers – to accelerate autonomous vehicle development.

“As vehicle systems become more complex, safety is more important than ever. Automakers and Tier 1 suppliers are demanding ASIL-B certification for lidar, radar and smart edge sensor applications,” said Ian Riches, vice president, Global Automotive Practice, TechInsights. “With the release of the new XA Artix UltraScale+ devices, AMD demonstrates its continued commitment and investment in the latest functional safety solutions for the automotive market.”

Customers are already developing next-generation ADAS edge systems based on the new devices, including a leading lidar company using XA Artix UltraScale+ devices for autonomous applications. Automotive developers can use these devices for sensor fusion, combining data from multiple edge sensors and performing image and video processing before porting it to an external SoC. In addition, the new XA Artix UltraScale+ devices can be connected to multiple in-vehicle displays to enhance infotainment functions.

These new, cost-optimized XA Artix FPGAs are available now and offer high serial bandwidth and signal processing density in an ultra-compact form factor. Artix UltraScale+ devices maximize system performance over DSP bandwidth for cost-sensitive and low-power ADAS edge applications, including networking, image and video processing, and secure connectivity.

AMD sees itself at the forefront of the competition for high-performance computing for in-vehicle applications, with a broad range of high-performance CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs and adaptive SoCs, especially since its acquisition of FPGA manufacturer Xilinx in 2022. From controlling in-vehicle infotainment systems to advanced driver assistance systems, autonomous driving and networking applications where functional safety is paramount, AMD aims to provide automotive manufacturers with silicon and software solutions from a single source.
