Lidar expert Ibeo files for insolvency

Hamburg, Germany, based manufacturer of lidar sensors Ibeo GmbH has filed for insolvency, which has has been granted. According to this, the company can carry out the insolvency proceedings on its own. The aim of the proceedings is to find an investor for what the company considers to be the global technology leader in the field of lidar sensors for autonomous driving. For this purpose, the management remains in office and fully capable of acting; operations in all company divisions continue in full, the company said in a press release. Ibeo operates branches in Hamburg, Eindhoven and Detroit with a total of around 400 employees.

The reason for the insolvency application is that further growth financing could not be secured. “Therefore, we are now specifically looking for interested parties to support Ibeo’s further growth,” explained Managing Director Ulrich S. Lages. “We continue to believe in our market-leading technology, our highly skilled employees as well as our business model and see a large future market for Ibeo’s lidar sensors, including the world’s first operational 4D solid-state lidar sensor for automotive series use.” Lages also said that the company is in talks with potential investors since May 2022.

Shareholders in Ibeo GmbH include automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen, which took a stake in the lidar sensor manufacturer in 2016, initially through its venture capital firm Zukunft Ventures GmbH, and since 2019 through its subsidiary ZF Automotive Germany GmbH. In 2021, the Chinese technology company AAC Technologies also took a stake in Ibeo.
