BMW is driving a test i7 around Munich with prismatic all solid state battery cells (ASSB) with a new module concept.
The fifth generation large format solid state battery cell used a sulfide electrolyte developed by Solid Power in the US with a high content silicon anode and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) lithium cathode. The tests cover the management of cell expansion and how the operating pressure controlled and how to adjust the temperature conditions.
20Ah ASSB cells have been at BMW since the end of 2023 for qualification and testing.

“Solid Power is extremely proud that our partnership with BMW has resulted in the first demonstration of truly all-solid-state battery cells in a vehicle,” said John Van Scoter, President and Chief Executive Officer of Solid Power. “We believe in the promise of ASSB’s and continue to drive innovation of our sulfide electrolyte in support of that future for EV’s.”
Solid Power is building a plant in the US to make the key sulfide-based electrolyte with backing from the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains at the US Department of Energy as part of the Inflation Reduction Act. This has so far escaped the recall of funding that has hit the US CHIPS Act in recent weeks.
The cells were developed and manufactured by Solid Power in collaboration with experts from the BMW Group. Further development steps are required to implement ASSB technology in a competitive overall storage system, says BMW. The company is also working with Ilika in the UK on a silicon-based cell and points out that it has a network of around 300 partners for battery technology, including established companies, start-ups and universities.
BMW will operate a solid battery cell prototype line at its Cell Manufacturing Competence Centre in Parsdorf on the basis of a research and development license with Solid Power. Ilika is also ramping up a pilot line for its cells.
