Elektrobit and the publisher of the Linux distribution Ubuntu, Canonical, have agreed on a partnership. The aim of the cooperation is to open up the advantages of Ubuntu for automotive software.
The background to the cooperation is the rapid development in the field of automotive software. The automotive industry is on the way to the software-defined vehicle. The partnership between the two software companies is intended to simplify the development of future vehicle applications for vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and developers. At the same time, it aims to ensure that stringent automotive standards are met.
The collaboration combines Canonical’s popular open source Linux operating system with Elektrobit’s expertise in automotive embedded software. This enables long-term maintenance, over-the-air updates and innovation in in-vehicle functional safety – all backed by Ubuntu’s developer community.
“The combination of Elektrobit’s world-class automotive offering and Ubuntu’s widespread adoption and reliability paves the way to a new era of software-defined vehicles,” explained Régis Paquette, VP Global Alliances and Channels at Canonical. “Ubuntu’s cross ECU availability, developer desktops and cloud reduce OS fragmentation and maintenance. In parallel, the deployment of digital twins is facilitated. Together with the open source community, Elektrobit and Canonical provide greater stability to the automotive industry, enabling greater efficiency and focus on key differentiators.”
Elektrobit believes its collaboration with Canonical will enable it to offer a Linux-based operating system solution for the automotive industry. This open source solution is intended to complement Elektrobit’s product portfolio and provide the key elements for an automotive operating system solution from a single source.
