Foxconn to use NXP technology for EV platforms

NXP Semiconductors announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hon Hai Technology Group (“Foxconn”) to jointly develop platforms for a new generation of smart, connected vehicles. Hon Hai (Foxconn), the world’s largest electronics manufacturer and a leading technology solutions provider, will leverage NXP’s portfolio of automotive technologies and extensive safety expertise to enable architectural innovations and platforms for electrification, connectivity and automated driving.

The collaboration between the Dutch semiconductor manufacturer and the Chinese technology and manufacturing services provider builds on the company’s digital cockpit partnership, which focused on NXP’s i.MX application processors and NXP Software Defined Radio platform.

The primary focus of the expanded collaboration is Foxconn’s electric vehicle platform efforts, leveraging NXP’s system expertise and comprehensive electrification portfolio – from NXP S32 processors to analogue front-end, driver, networking and power products. Connectivity solutions are another focus of innovation, using the latest NXP S32 domain and zonal controller family for gateways and vehicle network control. A third pillar is safe automated driving, supported by NXP’s leading radar solutions. NXP will also provide hardware and software support and leverage the expertise of its extensive third-party ecosystem in electrification, connectivity and automation.

Foxconn, known primarily as a manufacturing service provider for electronic systems, has for some time been seeking to expand its activities both geographically and thematically. Among other things, the company bought into power semicondcutor manufacturer Advanced Power Electronics and RF designer arQana Wireless. The company is also looking to enter the automotive manufacturing space and is rumoured to be a potential manufacturing partner for Apple’s iCar development project.
