Hyundai Mobis, Vector to jointly develop automotive software

Hyundai Mobis, the world’s number seven automotive supplier, and the software company Vector (Stuttgart, Germany) plan to jointly develop software platforms for the automotive industry. The initial focus will be on infotainment, sensor technology and certain driver assis

As software platforms have become a critical component for competitiveness in vehicle manufacturing, automotive manufacturers are increasingly demanding that their suppliers deploy Autosar-based software platforms with the quality reliability required for vehicle operation. Hyundai Mobis and Vector have therefore signed a Memorandum of Understanding with which they plan to pool their resources. Through this Memorandum of Understanding, the two companies hope to increase the competitiveness of their automotive software in the global automotive industry.

The two companies will initially incorporate the jointly developed software into core components for parking systems, sensors for autonomous driving, infotainment systems and electrified parts. The list of core components installed with the platform is also expected to grow.

According to Senior Vice President Jae-ho Jang of Hyundai Mobis, “This strategic partnership will not only improve our competitiveness and quality reliability in the global automotive industry, but also make us a leader in the mobility software industry.”

Ji-Hwan Chang, president of Vector Korea, added: “Vector is excited to work with Hyundai Mobis to develop mission-critical software platforms for the automotive industry. We look forward to contributing our industry-leading Autosar expertise and products to support Hyundai Mobis’ software-driven mobility transformation.”

From Hyundai Mobis’ perspective, this partnership is expected to be just the beginning of more long-term partnerships with major software companies that have elemental technologies for automated driving. The next of these partnerships will likely be in the areas of automotive communication solutions and sensors for autonomous driving.

Hyundai Mobis sees its core competencies in the areas of sensors, sensor fusion in ECUs and software development for safety control. The company’s products also include various components for electrification, brakes, chassis and suspension, steering, airbags, lighting and automotive electronics. The company operates a research and development centre in Korea and four technology centres in Germany, China, India and the United States.
