Renesas Electronics has developed a video diagnostic bridge chip for head up displays (HUD), instrument clusters and electronic mirrors.
These are safety critical element that require components compliant the the ISO26262 ASIL-B safety levels.
The RAA278830 Video Diagnostics Bridge IC is a dual Low-Voltage Differential Signal (LVDS) LCD video processor that includes many of the required safety features for ASIL-B in a 72SCQFN package that measures 10mm x 10mm.
The functional safety features built into the device and specifically designed to avoid any corruption of images through monitoring of the signal integrity as well as the video content itself. The internal diagnostics and measurement engines can detect frozen video, incorrect colours, broken or corrupt video images, as well as flashing, flickering, and video images that could obstruct the driver’s view of the road for HUD systems.

The dual inputs on the RAA278830 use the Open LDI (Open LVDS Display Interface) specification with CRC and parity checks, BIST, and redundancy safety mechanisms implemented throughout the entire data path, as well as I/O monitoring of video timing, signal integrity, and content. It can compensate for flickering, flashing, occlusion, and glare detection via an image enhancement engine.
There is a SPI-Flash based on screen display (OSD) as well as an embedded font based OSD with the ability to boot from SPI Flash so no microcontroller is needed. The flash also supports multiple banks of memory for fail-safe over the air (OTA) updates.
“Our automotive customers have consistently asked us to add functional safety features to our industry-leading video processing technology,” said Jason Kim, Vice President and General Manager of the Configurable Mixed-Signal Division at Renesas. “The RAA278830 delivers all of the features needed to create safe, easy-to-implement and economical LCD display for all types of passenger vehicles.”
The RAA278830 is available today with the RTK278830 evaluation board in multiple configurations.
