Green hydrogen producer Lhyfe and automotive supplier Schaeffler plan to jointly boost green hydrogen production.
To this end, they have reached an agreement to build and operate an electrolysis plant on Schaeffler’s factory site in Herzogenaurach (Bavaria) with a capacity of up to 15 megawatts. With the output of the electrolyzer, Schaeffler intends not only to make its own production climate-neutral, but also to drive decarbonization in the region.
The aim of the partnership is to supply regional customers with around 3.7 tons of green hydrogen every day from 2025. In addition to Schaeffler, potential customers include municipalities and hydrogen filling stations. The waste heat generated by electrolysis will also be fed into industrial processes within the Schaeffler plant. In addition, part of the agreement is a technology partnership to promote the use of Schaeffler electrolysis stacks.

For Schaeffler, hydrogen is a strategic business area and part of the company’s Roadmap 2025.
Electrolysers consist of metallic bipolar plates that are layered to form so-called stacks. Water (H2O) is chemically broken down into its components, the gases oxygen (O2) and hydrogen (H2), using energy. Schaeffler is contributing electrolyzers with polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) in the form of a technology partnership.
Founded in 2017 in Nantes, Lhyfe enables regional and local establishment of hydrogen ecosystems and the tailored production of green hydrogen in industrial quantities through its production sites.
