Omnivision expands automotive TheiaCel tech with 5MP sensor

Omnivision has developed a high–dynamic range image sensor with TheiaCel technology that mitigates LED flicker regardless of lighting condition.

The OX05D10 5 megapixel CMOS image sensor uses the Omnivision TheiaCel technology, which provides LED flicker mitigation (LFM) without sacrificing image quality  where high dynamic range (HDR), low-light performance and LFM are critical. The sensor has  ~140 dB dynamic range using VS exposure for dynamic range extension and over 110 dB LFM and motion free dynamic range in a single exposure.

The increasing adoption of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD) requires improved LFM, HDR and high-resolution image sensors.

For example, pulsed illumination from LED traffic lights poses a serious challenge for many imaging solutions, preventing ADAS and AD systems from correctly detecting lighted traffic signs. The 2.1µm single-pixel TheiaCel technology uses a lateral overflow integration capacitors (LOFIC) design together with other proprietary HDR technologies such as dual conversion gain (DCG) to capture extremely high-contrast scenes for optimum content and image quality.

“The new OX05D10 is the latest addition to our family of automotive sensors that feature TheiaCel technology, joining the OX08D10 8MP sensor,” said Dr. Paul Wu, head of automotive product marketing at Omnivision.

TheiaCel enables the OX05D10 to achieve high LFM without sacrificing image quality, and the OX05D10 also retains all the most important features that automotive OEMs demand, including low-light performance, small size and low power. We have expanded our product line to offer our customers the choice between 8MP and 5MP, depending on their needs.”

The OX05D10 5MP sensor has support for 4-lane MIPI CSI-2 and a-CSP package technology for the smallest possible camera. Samples of the OX05D10 are available now, and it will be in mass production in Q3 2025.
