Power inductors target ADAS/AD power management

With the CLT32 series, TDK presents power inductors that are characterised by a novel design and extremely small dimensions. Application areas are primarily the safety-relevant power management of ADAS and AD systems in vehicles.

The nine types of the CLT32 series cover an inductance spectrum from 17 nH to 440 nH and are designed for saturation currents from 13.5 A to 60 A. The CLT32 series has a footprint of only 3.5 mm. They have a footprint of only 3.2 x 2.5 mm2 with a height of 2.5 mm, making them by far the most compact SMT power inductors in their performance class. They are designed for a temperature range of -40 °C to 165 °C including self-heating.

Special attention is paid to the innovative design of these AEC-Q200 qualified components. The design consists of a solid copper coil that is overmoulded with a ferromagnetic plastic compound. The coil ends already function as terminals. This makes the usual contacting between wire and terminals obsolete for inductors, which significantly increases reliability – especially for automotive applications. The solid copper coil also achieves an extremely low RDC value, which keeps losses to a minimum. The DC resistance is only 0.39 mΩ with the inductance value of 17 nH.

In the target applications (ADAS and AD), high-performance processors are used that require currents in the double-digit ampere range. Power management ICs (PMICs) are used as power supply units to provide these high currents. Power inductors for stabilisation are key components at the outputs. The CLT32 types are designed for switching frequencies of up to 10 MHz and thus already meet future requirements for DC/DC converters with high clock rates.
