ST full bridge with real-time diagnostics for automotive drives

STMicroelectronics has developed an integrated full-bridge DC motor driver with real time diagnostics for functional-safety automotive applications.

As well as integrating advanced diagnostics, the VNH9030AQ full bridge driver has a dedicated pin for real-time output status that saves external circuitry and cuts the bill of materials (BoM).

With an RDS(on) resistance of 30mΩ per leg, the VNH9030AQ efficiently handles mid- and low-power DC-motor driven applications such as door-control modules, washer pumps, powered lift gates, powered trunks, and seat adjusters. The 35A full bridge integrates the high-side and low-side MOSFET die with gate drivers, diagnostics, and protection against overvoltage transients, undervoltage, short-circuit conditions, and cross conduction. It has the flexibility to configure the MOSFETs either in parallel or in series for systems involving multiple motors or to meet other specific requirements.

The device incorporates a dual monolithic high-side driver and two low-side switches built in ST’s M0-9 process technology to integrate the signal/protection circuitry.

The input signals INA and INB can directly interface the microcontroller to select the motor direction and the brake to VCC condition. Two selection pins (SEL0 and SEL1) to address the information are available on the multisense to the microcontroller.

The multisense pin allows monitoring the motor current by delivering a current proportional to the motor current value and provides the diagnostic feedback and Case temperature according to the implemented truth table. The PH_OUT pin provides feedback on the OUTA and OUTB state for safety-relevant functions.

The PWM, up to 25 kHz, allows controlling the speed of the motor in all possible conditions or selecting the brake to GND condition. In all cases, a low-level state on the PWM pin turns off both the LSA and LSB switches.

The three die are assembled in a QFN 6x6mm triple pad 26+2L package equipped with three exposed islands for optimized dissipation performances. This package is specifically designed for the harsh automotive environment and offers improved thermal performance thanks to exposed die pads.

The VNH9030AQ is in production now and available from $2.48 for orders of 1000 pieces.
